Site Engineer – Road & Surfacing

About the Role

Our client is seeking a Site Engineer to join their growing road construction and surfacing operations in Kildare.

This is a roads-only position. Candidates must have genuine experience working on road construction, road surfacing, tarmac/asphalt or associated civil engineering works, or be willing and committed to developing their career exclusively within the roads sector.

The role is open to candidates across a broad range of experience levels, from recent Civil Engineering graduates through to experienced Senior Site Engineers.

This creates an excellent opportunity for a graduate with the right road-focused experience or background to develop under experienced engineers and project managers, while also offering an attractive opportunity for an experienced engineer looking to take on greater responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the planning, setting out and delivery of road construction and surfacing projects.

• Work closely with Site Managers, Project Managers and senior engineering personnel to ensure projects are delivered efficiently and to specification.

• Carry out setting out and surveying activities on road and surfacing works.

• Monitor road construction and tarmac/asphalt operations on site.

• Ensure works are completed in accordance with drawings, specifications and quality standards.

• Conduct quality control checks on materials, workmanship and completed surfaces.

• Monitor levels, measurements and quantities throughout project delivery.

• Maintain accurate site records, daily reports and project documentation.

• Assist with method statements, risk assessments and other relevant site documentation.

• Liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, clients and other project stakeholders.

• Monitor project progress and report any issues or potential delays to senior management.

• Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with health, safety and environmental requirements.

• Assist with resolving technical issues and problems arising on site.

• Support the successful delivery of road projects from preparation through to completion.

Experience Required

Essential

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.

• Previous experience working on road construction, road surfacing or associated civil engineering projects.

• Strong understanding of tarmac/asphalt and road construction processes.

• Candidates must be comfortable working exclusively within the roads sector.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

• Good communication and organisational skills.

• Ability to work effectively as part of a site-based team.

• Full driving licence is desirable.

Experience Levels

We are open to candidates at different stages of their engineering career, including:

Graduate / Junior Site Engineers

• Civil Engineering qualification.

• Some exposure to road construction, surfacing or tarmac through placement, internship or previous employment.

• Strong willingness to develop a career specifically within the roads sector.

Site Engineers

• Previous experience delivering road construction or surfacing projects.

• Practical experience with setting out, levels, quality control and site documentation.

• Good understanding of road construction methodologies.

Senior Site Engineers

• Strong track record delivering road and surfacing projects.

• Ability to take ownership of engineering responsibilities on site.

• Experience coordinating subcontractors and site activities.

• Strong technical and commercial awareness.

Important: Candidates whose experience is primarily in building, residential, utilities or other areas of civil engineering but who have no road/tarmac experience will not be suitable unless they can demonstrate a genuine willingness and ability to move exclusively into road construction.
